Solving a Hot Mess - Spice Organization

Does anyone else share my pain in the near impossible task of keeping spices organized?   With a mixture of short jars, tall jars, and jumbo jars, I'm always on my tiptoes trying to see around the containers and often end up purchasing spices that I already had in this black-hole of a cabinet...

I had looked for a few solutions before: 1) the cool drawer organizers are nifty...but I only have 2 drawers in my entire kitchen, 2) the lazy-susan-type spice turntables are a classic fix...but they don't fit in my narrow cabinets, 3) there are some design-savvy countertop spice displays...but I don't have the counter space for it.  I thought I was plumb out of luck until I found another spice contraption that I wasn't aware of - the tiered spice rack.  Not a rocket science design, friends, but I honestly didn't know they existed!

There are several great designs out there for this type of rack, but I settled on the Copco Non-Skid 3-Tier Cabinet Organizer because it was narrow enough to fit in my anything-but-deep cabinets and it had nearly 5-star reviews on Amazon.com.  Gotta admit - the reviews sell me every time...

Let me just say, when this baby arrived via Amazon Prime 2-Day shipping, I was as giddy as a school girl.  I love me some organization!  Speaking of school - here's my corny spice organization equation (say that 5 times fast).

(Yes, I've been playing around with Power Point 2010, so you'll have to bare with me and the joy that is the "Remove Background" function for graphics.  Love, love, love it!)

After about 10 minutes of getting rid of some old jars and deciding which spices made the front two rows and which underused spices were banished to the back row (ground coriander, anyone?), this is what I ended up with.

Now I'm breathing easier and I don't dread looking at a recipe and wondering, "gee, do I even have that spice?"  The only bad thing about organizing for me, is that it's a minor addiction.  Once I start, it's hard to stop, so who knows what's next...  Good thing we're moving in 2 months, which means I have a whole lot of organizing and purging that needs to be done.

A final before/after parting shot....

Hopefully you've been inspired to organize a bit yourselves, or at least play with Power Point 2010...

I bought a couple of those drawer systems and they work great. I pull out the drawer and all my spices are face up and easy to read. I know at a glance where they are and what I need. I don't have to fumble around the bottles with this.
